Amelia Earhart & Current Search on Gardner Island
As a former flier with experience in the area where Amelia Earhart was lost, Herbert has followed the various investigations and speculations about her fate. In particular, he is skeptical about the current focus of investigation on Gardner Island. He found the following quotation on page 412 (Section on Gardner Island) from Sailing Directions for the Pacific Islands, Volume 2, 5th edition, 1940, US Navy Department - Hydrographic Office, US Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.
"It was surveyed by the New Zealand Navy in 1938 and coral heads and channels have been buoyed with 50-gallon drums."
The question is: with this survey being conducted about a year following the loss of the plane (2 July 1937), how could the survey party miss the remains of the aircraft alleged to have landed nearby?
